Jean Hugé has a PhD in Science, a Master in Bio-Science Engineering and a Master in Conflict & Development. His research is centred on functions and applications of sustainability assessment in transitions towards sustainable development.

Between 2005 and 2011 he was involved in various policy-supporting projects at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel and at the Université Libre de Bruxelles, focusing on ex ante impact assessment in Belgium and in developing countries (in particular in Africa).

Aviel Verbruggen (°1949), Energy & Environmental Economist. Professor University of Antwerp. Trained in engineering and applied economics at Leuven, Antwerp and Stanford University.

Founder of research and advisory units: STEM, REGASA, CENERGIE. Conceived, supervised and edited the State of the Environment Reports {MIRA} in Flanders (1993-98); first president of Flanders’ Environmental Advisory Council {MiNa-Raad} (1991-95). Member IPCC: Third, Fourth and Fifth Assessment Reports, Working Group III: Mitigation and Adaptation (1998-2014).

Lead Author, Special Report on Renewable Energy (2009-11). The research focuses on international climate policies (architecture, instruments like emissions trading and budget reform), and on energy transitions and the role of nuclear power (sustainability assessment and discourse), fossil fuels, and renewable energy at the supply side.

Cogeneration or CHP is a topic considered occasionally, e.g. in 2015 is shown how to measure combined power output in mixed condensing-cogeneration operation (solving a longstanding CHP issue). Study of conceptual issues (like irreversibility) is necessary to improve societal decision-making.

Dr. Nadejda Komendantova is a coordinator of the research theme ‘Governance in transition’ within IIASA’s Risk and Resilience (RISK) Program.

Her research interests include participatory and multi-risk governance of climate change mitigation and adaptation, based on the understanding of views and risk perceptions of involved stakeholders, of governance structures, market and civil society as well as social institutions and political processes towards more adaptive and inclusive governance approach, which is central to the science-policy interface.

Her research work includes more than 60 publications in peer-reviewed publications in such journals as Energy Policy, Natural Hazards, Renewable and Sustainable Energies Reviews and others. Her work has also been granted awards from the Academic Council of the United Nations as well as the Julius Raab Foundation.

She received a number of invitations to speak at high-level forums such as at the Directorate-General for Research and Innovation of the European Commission, NATO, Energy Community Secretariat and Energy Charter Forum as well as Economic and Environmental Committee Meetings of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), JRC and Energy Community Secretariat.
